The Electric Light EP

Adam of the New Media out of Baltimore asked me if I'd give a listen to their EP Electric Light.

I was immediately struck by Adam's email asking me to listen to the EP.  It was long - too long in my opinion.  I was ADD before ADD was hip.  A simple please listen to our stuff would have worked, instead I learned that:

"...Upon our creation as The New Media, we have decided to make a point that this band needed to work different than the bands of our past.  Respect and honesty is the only way to make the means for a long lasting relationship.  These virtues apply beyond our internal endeavors and will exist in our relationships to our suppliers, the venues, our future support, and most importantly, our fans.  We are aware that without these components, a band cannot survive." and "... We do not want to move forward without the right pieces in the right places (i.e. manager, label, booking agent and lawyer)."

Honestly, the first thing I thought was "Man, I bet their band meetings suck."

Onto the EP.  The New Media have offered up four songs on this effort.

I can say that I was impressed with track 4 The Moon and The Ocean.  There is some cool stuff going on on this track.  It is pretty rocking.  The other three tracks, while well produced and well played left me yawning.    I was just bored.  I felt as if I'd heard this before.

It might just be their bad luck in that their review came up in the cue right after A.M. Session.

I have the same feeling I first had when I was in my late teens and had spent the weekend at a buddy's house with his Dad, a huge Jazz fan, literally bombarding us with bebop all weekend.  That is, when I got home and turned on the radio I was actually relieved to hear some bland standard pop music that didn't require me to pay attention.   Such is the feeling I have listening to the New Media.

Check them out for yourself on their My Space page.

Grouch rating: 2 scowls out of 5.  The music is OK.  They can play, I just don't hear anything that really grabs me aside from track 4 The Moon and The Ocean.
