Get The Gore
I found these girls on emusic.com and really liked the free tracks they have - so much that I downloaded the album Get The Gore.
Basically I love this music. Killer garage rock. The sound is hard edged filled with outrageous two string licks, a funky bass, power chords and a girl who can slam the drums. What's not to love?
The vocals sound good as well - I like the words and the sound of her voice. "Deep down inside I'm a selfish witch, one half Tom boy one half Bitch." Rock on ladies, rock on!
Anyone who thinks girls can't rock is just plain wrong. Listen to this album and tell me that woman doesn't wail on guitar.
I really like this stuff. It is such a breath of fresh air. So where did they come from? I'll give you one guess. That's right kids, DETROIT. There is something in the water I tell you.
The band formed in 1997 and went through several line up changes during the recording of their first couple of albums. They became popular in Detroit and then gained more popularity thanks to Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage radio show which led to opening for Iggy Pop. Man, what a killer show that must have been - before Marilyn Manson or those guys dressed like clowns there was Iggy.
Listen to this album.
Of all the tracks I have I think the above referenced Pleasure Unit is one of the best. Hard ass gutter rock - you got to love it. I could go through and comment on each track, but there really isn't any need to do so. What you find on the album are all things I like:
1. Loud tight music
2. A guitarist who can make it scream and knows how to solo.
3. Catchy chord filled riffs.
4. Heavy bass line
5. Drums that keep time with a few interesting fills thrown in - I like the breaks in a lot of the songs Buried and Dead in particular has cool drums - the trade off between the bass and guitar/harmonica (yes I said harmonica) is supported nicely by her rock solid drumming.
6. I like the lyrics - hard edged and sarcastic sometimes funny. Talking about screaming her lungs out and sweet potatoes.
7. Anytime I'm almost bored with a song a really cool guitar lick comes out of no where. I find my self tapping my foot and smiling "There it is. BOOM That's Rock and Roll!"
4 and 1/2 scowls out of 5 scowls on the Grouch scale.
Since I first wrote this I've listened to the album A LOT. So much so that when GabeO the magical mystical Mexican biker elf who comes bearing the gift of music told me " Dude you know they get free stuff from Gretsch." I figured another half a scowl was in order - they don't quite make a perfect 5 scowl rating, but they are very close.
