Blinded

The other day the guys from the Toronto based band Morning Fame asked me to give a listen to their new single which is called Blinded.

They stressed that this is "a straight pop rock song, so its not metal, hardcore or something harsh".

That is exactly what it is.  Considering that it is a pop song designed to appeal to the widest possible audience and hopefully garner some commercial radio airplay, I'd say that the song delivers.

They work the formula well.  The music is well played and his voice sounds OK.  The drummer did do some cool stuff that made me smile a bit. The guitar opened up with a decent jam at the 2:19 mark.

So I guess from the band's perspective this is a really good song.  From my perspective however, I was just really bored.

The song starts off well enough, I thought it has a bit of a Bob Seger sound albeit circa the time when he started to really suck (with his album The Distance).

Then the vocals came in and while they are sung well enough I just can't shake the contemporary Christian vibe.  I have no idea if these guys are born again, but the repetitive chorus of "I'm so blinded. Lost and finded (sic).Found you somewhere somehow." * Makes me think this is the kind of music that might go over at a Campus Crusade for Christ rally.  That's cool if that is your thing, but its not mine.

* For the record Joe from Morning Fame emailed me and said that I misheard the lyrics to the song.  The correct lyrics to the chorus are:

I’m so blinded
Lost and find it
I’ll find you somewhere, somehow
I’m so blinded
Lost and find it
Come on, I’m waiting now

He also mentioned that the band is in fact not a born again Christian band.  I must say that Joe responded very professionally to my review which shows a lot of character.  While I didn't care for this song, I hope to hear their work in the future.

So what is the bottom line?  It's not my idea of a good song, but I'm not their target demographic.

Grouch rating of 1.5 Scowls out of 5 on the Grouch scale.
