Once again GabeO has brought me some off the wall stuff. Everyone needs a friend like GabeO, whenever I’m having a drag of a day suddenly out of no where there appears a 220 pound six foot tall Mexican biker elf bearing the gift of music. With the gleam of his grill and the blazing of a tat, happiness spreads throughout my work area as new and interesting sounds spew forth from my MP3 player. Then he is gone.
This brings me to The Ghastly Ones and their album A-Haunting We Will Go-Go. These guys are a surf band out of California. At some point Rob Zombie heard them and signed them to his label.
I really don’t know much more about them than that. Basically this is pure Surf and it is done well. I’m not a huge fan of Surf music, actually it all kind of sounds the same to me. These guys, however, play it very well. The songs are tight and clean. The man can definitely make his guitar scream. I find myself admiring the band’s technique. There isn’t a bad song on the album.
So what’s up with the Halloween motif? You got me. its pretty cool though – the album is filled with little bits of old Hollywood Horror camp. I have the feeling that these guys dug Vincent Price when they were kids. When I was a kid there was a Saturday afternoon movie show on TV called Sir Graves Ghastly. ( Check out his site via the link to the left) Sir Graves was the vampire host of a show that played old B grade monster flicks. It was great. This music would have been ideal for his theme song.
This LP gets 3 scowls on the Grouch scale. Musically the band is good. They are tight and can play well. I dig the campy horror shtick. It’s a good album I enjoy listening to.
