Doing More With Less
Sorry-Ok-Yes are a duo from Italy and they make a pretty good racket for just two guys. I've been listening to their five-song E.P. Doing More With Less for the past couple of days. The songs are catchy and it seems like adding a third player to the mix might throw things out of whack. What I like most is that the guitars are gritty but well played. Underneath the guitars the drums pound and it makes for an explosive mix. Add to the instrumentation the fact that these guys seem like they're really having a good time and you can't go wrong. The worst thing I can say about these guys is that sometimes the singer's accent can be a little distracting, but that's a minor complaint especially after you listen to a couple of songs.
Being a two piece, there are sure to be comparisons to more well known two-piece bands (like The Grouch-reviewed Flat Duo Jets). Sorry-Ok-Yes throw a little more punk and metal into the mix than the jets do and that's just fine with me. These guys also have a little more garage-band feel, and they lack the raw power and energy of the other band as well. That's not so say that these guys don't bring it.
My favorite track of the ones on this E.P is the first one: Self-Reliant. It has a good beat and the kind of grunting blues inspired guitars that I like.
Track two is called Sixteens and it also features a cool guitar riff coupled with a slower drum part. This reminds me a little bit of some of the better parts of 90's rock.
The third song, Prime Time Idiocy lands in the ruts carved out by the first two songs but adds a high pitched "WOO-HOO" to mix it up a little bit.
Next comes That Precise Afternoon. I suspect this song was the guitarist's concession to the drummer. It's definitely drum heavy, but in a good way. The gradually slowing outro is cool too. Good Stuff.
Another gem is the last song, No Soul. It has a cool Drum part at the beginning as well as some memorable guitar riffage. Me Likey.
Overall I recommend that you give these guys a chance and I give them three scowls out of five.
